This is one of the best books available on the economic reforms now underway in China and India. While the title states that the discussion concentrates on two sectors-agriculture and trade-the book itself places developments in those two sectors within a broader framework of policies and performance in both economies. It reviews overall economic goals and performance and examines how goals and policies influenced specific policies for the trade and agricultural sectors, and in turn how specific policies and newly established institutions in those two sectors determined economic performance. The review of policies and performance concentrates on changes over the past decade; how those changes influenced performance; and what further changes may be necessary to achieve the new goals. Thus, in my opinion, the book is far less restricted than the title, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the overall economic development of both countries since 1950 as well as in the specific sectors.
