Our subjects “Democracy and civil society in the Balkans” touches on a number of burning issues. We are fully aware that our region rests on a razor’s edge. There have been some favourable developments, with the creation of new democracies and the beginning of the long effort to build up civil societies.
There are also huge problems that remain unsolved. Some stem from the structures and the values of our societies, some from the uncertainty as to ethical principles, some from conflict between states.
