An excellent and well-organized introductory sociology text examining essential areas in the field and the important research associated with them. Research questions begin each chapter, with apt readings, new biographical sketches of important figures in the field, and search words at the end of chapters to guide readers to current online articles.

Landis' applied approach combines readings, commentary, and core concepts. Adopters are satisfied with the lighter, core format of the text. The readings are diverse and deal with contemporary issues, thus increasing relevancy to students. The text is a smooth read for the 2-year college student, not too condescending, and not too complicated.
