Various representatives of the Roma intelligentsia have shown an increased interest in their community's culture in recent years. We are looking forward with interest to a collection of Roma tales and legends gathered and set out by Yosif Nunev, a head teacher in Rakitovo, which is due to come out in print. Manouche Romanov and Vasil Chaprazov have collected a wealth of Roma songs, poems and stories in their personal archives.
A great deal of information about the Gypsies in Bulgaria can be gleaned from statistical data from population censuses taken since the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman domination in 1878 until 1965 and from the last census in 1992.
There is equally little sociological and socio-psychological research dealing particularly with the Roma community in Bulgaria. In 1968, a sociological survey on towns and villages carried out by Professor J. Oshavkov also included information about this ethnic group. In 1977, professor Minko Minkov included 509 Gypsy respondents in the sample for the sociological research which he directed, called "The Working Characteristics of the Population in Bulgaria". He collected valuable information about the level of qualifications among the Gypsies in Bulgaria, their
level of employment and the attitudes of non-Gypsies towards the quality of work done by Roma individuals employed in material production in mixed industrial
enterprises and in the agricultural cooperatives. Both surveys used "selfidentification" as the criterion for ethnic identification.
