The enduring distinction of this volume is its challenge to traditional economic thinking. That thinking had always sought to explain economic growth in terms of resources, technologies, and human preferences. These factors, however, cannot account fully for economic growth. The editors of the book Vincent Ostrom, David Feeny, Hartmut Picht, argue that a fourth component – institutions – is the missing link.
In reissuing this book, the International Center for Self-Governance recognizes that it is even more important now than when it was first published, in 1988. It deserves to be read as widely as possible in the countries where ICSG is working to promote the self-governing and entrepreneurial way of life.
Vincent Ostrom
Vincent A. Ostrom (September 25, 1919 – June 29, 2012) was the Founding Director of the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis, based at Indiana University and the Arthur F. The Ostroms made particular study of fragmentation theory, rational choice theory, federalism, common-pool resources and polycentrism in government, basing much of his research on the work of early 20th century political economistsFrank Knight, Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich von Hayek. The Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization published a special issue, "Polycentric Political Economy: A Festschrift for Elinor and Vincent Ostrom", as the proceedings of a 2003 conference held in their honor, at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.
