Written by former Independent Sector President Brian O’Connell, this is the perfect guide to the issues, challenges, and possibilities facing a nonprofit organization and its board.
The Board Member’s Book covers:
• the impact of nonprofit organizations on the U.S. today
• the different responsibilities of board members, staff, and volunteers
• how to find, develop, and reward good board members
• ways to recruit, encourage, and evaluate the executive director
• effective strategies for fundraising and financial planning
• how to make the most of meetings and evaluate results
• and how to conduct ethical evaluations.
Board members; nonprofit executives and staff; teachers and students of nonprofit management; and volunteers should not miss Brian O'Connell's insights.
“This book begins with the observation that “people who get involved with public causes open themselves to frustration and disappointment…”, but it goes on to make the much more important point that “…through it all and after it all – those moments of making change happen for the better are among our lasting joys. There is something wonderfully rewarding in being part of an effort that does make a difference.”
Brian O'Connell is founding President of INDEPENDENT SECTOR, a national coalition of voluntary organizations, foundations, and corporations, which seeks to preserve and enhance our American traditions of giving, volunteering, and not-for-profit initiative. He is also Professor of Public Service at the College of Citizenship & Public Service at Tufts University. He previously served as President of the National Council on Philanthropy and as Executive Director of the Coalition of National Voluntary Organizations. For 12 years, he was the National Director of the Mental Health Association. O'Connell was Chairman of the Organizing Committee of CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation and has served as a board member of and advisor to many philanthropic and voluntary organizations. He is author of America's Voluntary Spirit; Voices From the Heart: In Celebration of America's Volunteers; and with Ann Brown O'Connell, Volunteers in Action.
