The book suggests that in the absence of government restrictions the voluntary forces of trusters, promisers, knowers and middle-men – as well as the tort system – would devise ways to assure a high degree of quality and safety. These grounds of trust are provided in a entrepreneurial ways not so different from the ways that other services are provided in the modern economy. Ia a great society people cannot know the contextual details of the many strangers they have occasion to deal with, so they look for seals of aproval and try to obtain seals of approval for themselves.

Daniel B. Klein

Daniel B. Klein (born 1962) is a professor of economics at George Mason University and an Associate Fellow of the Swedish Ratio Institute. Much of his research examines public policy questions, libertarian political philosophy, and the sociology of academia. He is the chief editor of Econ Journal Watch. Klein received his doctorate in economics from New York University in 1990.
